German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed optimism about the future of relations between Berlin and London, stating that the two nations are on a path to closer ties following the challenging years after Brexit.
“The first few years after Brexit were not easy,” Steinmeier told journalists shortly before departing for a state visit to the United Kingdom on Wednesday morning.
He noted that both sides have since learned to navigate the new realities more effectively and are actively working to strengthen their bilateral relations.
Steinmeier highlighted the significance of King Charles III’s visit to Germany in March 2023, which was his first state visit as monarch before his coronation.
“This shows how important German-British relations are to both of us, that German-British friendship is a matter close to our hearts,” Steinmeier said.
The three-day state visit marks the first by a German head of state in 27 years.
Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender, are scheduled to be welcomed with a carriage ride and military honors at Windsor Castle later on Wednesday.
A key meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street is also on the agenda, where discussions will focus on political and economic relations, cultural exchanges, and ways to bring people from the two countries together “more easily and effectively,” according to Steinmeier.
The visit aims to symbolize reconciliation and remembrance. On the final day, Steinmeier plans to lay a wreath at the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, a site in central England that was heavily bombed by the German Air Force during World War II.
This gesture underscores the commitment to healing historical wounds while building a forward-looking partnership in a post-Brexit Europe.
