GDAŃSK, Poland, — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for the immediate launch of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, declaring that the time has come to “end the killing” after more than four years of conflict.
Speaking at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in the Polish city of Gdańsk on Thursday, Merz reaffirmed Germany’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine while emphasizing that Europe and its trans-Atlantic allies remain prepared to increase economic pressure on Russia.
“Russia won’t win this war,” Merz stated, expressing confidence that continued international support for Ukraine would prevent Moscow from achieving its military objectives.
“The time has come to start negotiations, freeze the front line and put an end to the killing,” the German Chancellor said, urging renewed diplomatic efforts to bring an end to Europe’s deadliest conflict in decades.
Merz reiterated that Germany’s backing for Ukraine remains an “unwavering commitment” as Kyiv continues to defend itself against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Previous peace initiatives led by the United States failed to produce a breakthrough. European leaders are now seeking to revive negotiations while ensuring that Europe plays a central role in any future peace process.
Russia, however, has repeatedly rejected direct negotiations involving European nations and continues to insist on its maximum demands, including significant territorial concessions from Ukraine—conditions that Kyiv has consistently refused.
The Ukraine Recovery Conference is being co-hosted by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. The event has brought together representatives from the European Union, the Group of Seven (G7) major industrialized democracies, the World Bank, international financial institutions, and business leaders to discuss Ukraine’s reconstruction and long-term recovery.
The conference underscores the international community’s continued support for Ukraine while highlighting renewed efforts to pursue both economic recovery and a diplomatic path toward ending the war.
