Algiers ,12 Nov  (dpa) – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday granted a humanitarian pardon to imprisoned French-Algerian author Boualem Sansal, responding to a personal appeal from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The Algerian presidency said Tebboune chose to “respond positively” to Steinmeier’s request, recognizing Sansal’s deteriorating health and advanced age.

The arrangement allows the 75-year-old writer to travel to Germany for medical treatment, with Berlin responsible for his transport and care.Sansal, recipient of the 2011 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, was detained in November last year upon returning to Algiers.

He was sentenced in March to five years in prison on charges of undermining national unity and security, following remarks he made suggesting that Morocco’s borders had been changed to Algeria’s advantage during the French colonial period.

The conviction drew widespread criticism in France and among human rights groups. The German presidency expressed gratitude for Tebboune’s decision, calling it a gesture of “humanity and cultural respect.”
