The police force of Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, have issued warnings to several parliamentary groups about suspicious USB sticks mailed to lawmakers’ offices.
The packages, accompanied by English-language cover letters, arrived at multiple groups this week, according to a statement from the conservative parliamentary group on Friday. Other Bundestag factions also confirmed receiving similar parcels.
Bundestag police explicitly advised against connecting the USB sticks to any computer. Instead, they instructed recipients to forward the devices in a separate envelope for further examination.
Social Democrat lawmaker Marja-Liisa Völlers described the incident as “certainly concerning,” noting that investigations are underway.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) parliamentary group reported that the Bundestag administration circulated a warning email. A spokesman confirmed upon inquiry that several AfD lawmakers had received letters containing USB sticks.
In all known instances, the devices were either surrendered to Bundestag administration or destroyed immediately, in line with prior guidance issued via a circular email from the administration.
The Left parliamentary group stated it had not received any reports from its members about the suspicious USB sticks.
However, First Parliamentary Secretary Ina Latendorf said the group was alerted by Bundestag administration last week and again this week to avoid using any unsolicited USB devices sent by post.
