Brussels, January 11, 2026 – The European Union has witnessed a notable decrease in asylum applications for the second consecutive year, with a 20% annual drop reported in 2025, according to preliminary data from the European Commission.
The agency’s non-public report, obtained by the Welt am Sonntag newspaper and shared with dpa, indicates that approximately 780,200 applications were registered across the 27 EU member states, along with partner countries Norway and Switzerland, from January to mid-December 2025. This marks a substantial reduction of about one-fifth compared to the same period in 2024.
The decline is primarily attributed to fewer applications from Syrian nationals. Following the fall of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, many Syrians are optimistic about a brighter future in their homeland, leading to reduced migration outflows.
In Germany, the trend is even more pronounced. The German Interior Ministry reported earlier this month that initial asylum applications plummeted by 51% to 113,236 in 2025, down from the previous year. When including both initial and follow-up applications, Germany’s total stood at around 149,100 during the reporting period.
Other major EU destinations also saw high volumes, though overall lower than in prior years: France recorded 148,600 applications, Spain 137,300, and Italy 125,800.
EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner expressed satisfaction with the developments, stating that 2025 had been a successful year for European migration policy, without disclosing specific figures.
This downward trend reflects broader shifts in global migration patterns, influenced by geopolitical changes and enhanced border management strategies across the continent.
