Berlin – Fewer travellers in Germany have fallen victim to luggage theft at railway stations and on trains this year, according to the latest Federal Police statistics.
From January to October 2025, authorities recorded 16,891 cases of stolen bags and hand luggage – a notable drop from 20,379 cases reported in the same period last year.
The decline was observed across both stations and trains. Breakdowns show significant incidents in regional transport (2,834 cases), high-speed trains (2,519), and local transport (2,129). Additionally, 8,450 thefts were reported at stations during this timeframe.
The figures, released on Wednesday, encompass all railway operators in Germany and are based on the Police Entry Statistics, meaning offences are logged only when reported to authorities. Full-year 2025 data is not yet available.
Deutsche Bahn emphasised the overall low risk for passengers. With an estimated 20 million travellers and visitors passing through Germany’s 5,700 stations daily, “the risk of becoming a victim of crime remains very low,” a company spokeswoman stated.
Security remains a priority, with nearly 6,000 Federal Police officers and around 4,500 Deutsche Bahn security personnel deployed nationwide around the clock to protect passengers and staff.
Meanwhile, cases of bodily injury have remained stable compared to the previous year, with 13,393 offences reported by October. Most occurred at stations, while 2,640 were recorded on trains in open tracks, predominantly in regional and local services.
