– A hotel in Istanbul’s Fatih district was evacuated on Saturday evening following the deaths of a German mother and her two children from Hamburg, who were on holiday in Turkey. The evacuation, reported by the Turkish state news agency Anadolu, saw guests relocated to other accommodations, though the exact number of affected individuals remains unclear.
Authorities have launched a thorough investigation, removing all items from the hotel for laboratory testing. Forensic teams had previously collected samples of the hotel’s drinking water. Additionally, a ground-floor room was disinfected using chemicals, believed to be pesticides typically employed for pest control, according to Anadolu.
In connection with the incident, two individuals responsible for the disinfection process and a hotel manager were arrested on Saturday. The family’s father is currently in intensive care, while two other tourists who were staying at the same hotel were hospitalized over the weekend.
The tragedy unfolded after the family consumed various street foods, including stuffed mussels from a vendor, soup, and kokoreç—a traditional Turkish dish made from calf intestines—at another shop, as reported by the Sabah newspaper.
They also purchased Turkish delight, water, and ate chicken. On Wednesday, the family was initially admitted to a hospital with symptoms of suspected food poisoning. The children experienced nausea and vomiting but were discharged after treatment.
However, their condition worsened overnight, leading to the entire family’s readmission. Tragically, both children passed away shortly after, followed by their mother. Officials are operating under the assumption that food poisoning is the cause of the deaths.
When questioned by CNN Türk, one of the hotel owners emphasized that the establishment does not operate a restaurant and only provides water to guests.
The incident has raised concerns about food safety for tourists in popular destinations like Istanbul, prompting swift action from local authorities to prevent further risks.
