German Chancellor Friedrich Merz speaks at the Germany Day of the Junge Union (JU). The main topic of the three-day congress is likely to be the reform of the social systems.

Rust, Germany,15 Nov – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has once again firmly reiterated that his conservative party will not cooperate with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), dismissing any notion of a “firewall” and declaring the two parties as “worlds apart.”

Speaking at a meeting of his conservative bloc’s youth movement in the south-western German town of Rust on Saturday, Merz stated, “Not because there is a firewall between us – forget that word – we are worlds apart from this party. We have nothing in common with them.”

Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has consistently maintained this stance, emphasizing that he has no intention of jeopardizing the party’s storied legacy. He invoked the names of former chancellors Helmut Kohl and Konrad Adenauer, associating them with the CDU’s foundational values of democracy, stability, and European integration.

In his address, Merz also underscored Germany’s commitment to remaining an open society for immigrants. “While irregular migration must be consistently combated, immigrants who want to work in Germany will continue to be welcomed in the future,” he said, highlighting the need for balanced policies that address security concerns while supporting economic growth through skilled labor.

This statement comes amid ongoing debates in German politics about migration and the rise of populist parties like the AfD, which has gained traction in recent elections but remains isolated by mainstream parties due to its controversial positions on immigration, the EU, and other issues.

Merz’s remarks reinforce the CDU’s position as a centrist force, distancing itself from extremist elements while advocating for pragmatic reforms in migration policy.
