Belém, Brazil (dpa/TIN24) – Former German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock and incumbent Environment Minister Carsten Schneider are expected to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil over the weekend.
Baerbock, now serving as president of the UN General Assembly, will join multiple discussion rounds and events at the summit in Belém, located in the Amazon region, beginning Saturday.
Having previously spearheaded Germany’s negotiations at international climate conferences during her tenure as foreign minister overseeing global climate policy, Baerbock will no longer lead the primary talks.
At the outset of her visit, she labeled the climate crisis as “the greatest threat of our time,” even amidst numerous global wars and conflicts.
“Some 3.6 billion people – almost half the world’s population – are already severely threatened by the consequences of climate change: droughts, floods, extreme heat and growing food insecurity,” Baerbock told dpa.
This is exacerbating “the vicious cycle of hunger, poverty, displacement, instability and conflict,” she continued.
International collaboration is crucial, Baerbock emphasized, since “CO2 doesn’t stop at borders.”
She highlighted the urgent need for enhanced support to poorer nations, which contribute the least to emissions yet suffer the most, pointing out that a single hurricane can erase decades of progress in vulnerable island states.
Environment Minister Schneider, who oversees Germany’s official negotiating position, is also slated to arrive in Belém on Saturday.
Ahead of the negotiations’ critical stage, Schneider will meet with members of the Quilombola community, who depend on the rainforest for their livelihood, and visit a local nature reserve over the weekend.
