Germany has pledged at least €150 million ($175 million) to fund the purchase of US-made military equipment for Ukraine, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced on Friday during a high-level meeting in Berlin.
The session brought together the defence ministers of France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland, along with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal joined via video link for discussions centered on sustaining support for Ukraine’s defence against ongoing Russian aggression.
Pistorius emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to weaponize winter against civilians, intensifying air attacks to erode Ukraine’s resilience. “It is hard to imagine a greater contempt for human life,” he said, describing Moscow’s relentless strikes against critical infrastructure.
The European ministers reaffirmed their participation in NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a framework that channels the procurement of US-manufactured weapons to Kyiv. The initiative directly responds to earlier calls from US President Donald Trump for European nations to shoulder more responsibility in aiding Ukraine.
This new €150 million contribution follows a separate $500-million joint commitment from Nordic and Baltic states announced on Thursday. The coordinated efforts highlight Europe’s determination to secure Ukraine’s defence capabilities while addressing uncertainty over the future of the trans-Atlantic alliance.
The “Group of Five” format – established in the wake of Trump’s election victory last year-aims to bolster European defence readiness and maintain strategic continuity within NATO. Concerns about Washington’s commitment to the alliance have eased somewhat since members agreed to increase defence spending targets at The Hague summit in June.
