European Sleeper, the Dutch-Belgian railway company, announced plans on Wednesday to introduce a new night train service linking Paris and Berlin starting next year, filling the gap left by the soon-to-be-discontinued Nightjet route operated by Austria’s state-owned ÖBB.
The new connection will begin running three times a week from March 26, 2026, offering overnight travel between the two capitals. The route will pass through Brussels, where European Sleeper already operates services to Prague via Berlin, a setup the company says will make the line more cost-efficient.
ÖBB’s Paris-Berlin Nightjet is scheduled to end service in mid-December after only two years of operation, following the loss of French state subsidies that had offset millions of euros in annual costs. Despite strong passenger demand, the service has struggled to remain profitable due to limited round trips and idle daytime hours.
Ticket sales for European Sleeper’s new line will begin on December 16, with prices expected to be similar to those of the outgoing Nightjet. The company, structured as a cooperative, finances its routes through shareholder investments.
