German pharmaceutical and chemical group Bayer is once again tightening its belt over its long‑running legal battles in the United States linked to glyphosate and PCB chemicals.

The Leverkusen‑based company announced on Wednesday that it will allocate nearly €1 billion ($1.2 billion) in additional provisions this year to cover pending and potential settlements. The move reflects ongoing financial pressure from lawsuits alleging health risks associated with the glyphosate‑based weedkiller Roundup, a product inherited through Bayer’s $60‑billion acquisition of Monsanto in 2018.

Despite the continuing legal burden, chief executive Bill Anderson emphasized that strong results from Bayer’s agricultural division lifted the company’s operating profit above analysts’ expectations. The group also reaffirmed its 2025 earnings outlook adjusted for special items.

For the third quarter, Bayer posted a net loss of just under €1 billion on sales of around €9.7 billion, down 3.1 percent year‑on‑year. Adjusted for currency and portfolio impacts, sales edged up 0.9 percent.

Anderson expressed confidence that the company would face less financial strain from the lawsuits by the end of 2026. The increase in provisions, he explained, stemmed from recent settlement agreements and a moderate rise in the number of new glyphosate cases.

As of October 15, Bayer reported 197,000 registered claims, of which roughly 132,000 have been resolved or did not qualify under settlement terms.
