In a significant boost to law enforcement efforts amid ongoing security challenges, Manipur Police and security forces have arrested two militants from banned outfits and two cybercriminals in separate operations across the state. The arrests, carried out on Saturday, September 6, target alleged extortion activities terrorizing local businesses and a cyber fraud network exploiting mule bank accounts, police confirmed on Sunday.
The first militant apprehension unfolded in the Haoreibi area of Imphal West district, where an active cadre of the proscribed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) was nabbed from his residence at Haoreibi Awang Leikai under Wangoi Police Station. Identified as Sarungbam Boday Singh, 37, the suspect was deeply involved in extortion rackets, issuing monetary demands and threats to extract funds from shops, business establishments, and the general public in the valley areas. A mobile phone was recovered from his possession during the raid, which police believe was used to coordinate these illicit activities.
“This arrest disrupts a key extortion network that has been preying on the local economy,” a police statement highlighted, underscoring the militant’s role in instilling fear among residents and traders.
In a parallel operation in Thoubal district, joint security teams apprehended another insurgent affiliated with the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP-PWG). The individual, Hodam Bikram Singh—also known by aliases Amuba, Punshiba, and Tomthin—was picked up from the vicinity of Thoubal District Hospital. A resident of Wangjing Awang Leikai in Thoubal district, Singh was found in possession of a two-wheeler, which authorities suspect was linked to his movements for insurgent operations. While specific details on his extortion involvement are under investigation, the arrest is seen as a vital step in curbing the outfit’s influence in the region.
Shifting focus to the digital front, the Cyber Crime Police Station in Manipur struck a blow against online fraudsters by arresting two individuals from Thoubal district for operating mule bank accounts. The duo, identified as Kongkham Apu Singh, 32, from Thoubal Athokpam Awang Leikai, and Yengkhom Rasheshwori Leima, 39, from Thoubal Wangmataba Leikai, allegedly lured unsuspecting people into opening bank accounts. These accounts were then used to transfer and layer proceeds from cyber-fraud schemes in collusion with other criminals across networks.
Police recovered three mobile phones and several incriminating items from the accused, which are expected to yield crucial leads in unraveling the broader racket. “Investigations are ongoing to trace other members of this cybercrime syndicate,” officials stated, emphasizing the growing threat of such operations in the Northeast.
These arrests come at a time when Manipur continues to grapple with insurgency and rising cyber threats, reflecting intensified surveillance and collaborative efforts between state police and central forces. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant against extortion demands and suspicious online solicitations for bank accounts, promising swift action against perpetrators.
With these developments, security experts anticipate a temporary respite for affected communities, though sustained operations will be key to maintaining peace. Further updates are expected as interrogations progress.
